At Ridgeview Family Dental, we provide general, cosmetic, and restorative dentistry. One of the repairs that spans across all aspects of dentistry in our practice is that of the dental crown. Dr. R. McKell Young of Missouri is a dentist who uses dental crowns on a regular basis for his patients.
Dental crowns in dentistry
Dental crowns are ceramic caps that are made for patients to bond over a natural tooth or to place over an abutment. These restorations may also be used in conjunction with false teeth called pontics to create dental bridges. These versatile repairs are used in all aspects of dentistry:
- General dentistry – patients who have had a large filling placed in the smile due to cavities may benefit from the placement of a dental crown over the tooth to add an extra layer of protection. The same applies to a patient who has undergone endodontic therapy and needs to protect the natural tooth from further damage due to its now weakened state.
- Cosmetic dentistry – dental crowns are fabricated with porcelain and are made by the dentist to mimic the appearance of the existing teeth for seamless integration into the smile. Crowns may be placed over teeth that have experienced specific cosmetic issues such as chipping, breaking, or even permanent staining that does not respond to traditional methods of bleaching.
- Restorative dentistry – dental crowns, in all fields of dentistry, help restore the natural tooth. They can provide protection while repairing problems such as breakage that may affect the tooth’s ability to function properly. Additionally, patients who have been faced with tooth loss will be able to use a dental crown in many types of restorations. A dental crown makes up a dental bridge and can be placed over the abutment of an implant to act as a single tooth replacement option.
